Another Great event last night with an amazing turnout of almost 150 people from Shanghai, Beijing, Hong-Kong, Asia and the US, all converging to Mobilemonday after a day at GDC, the Mobile Developers’ Conference held in Shanghai. Our friends from Nokia honored us with a strong presence, with over 20 people for Nokia alone! China Mobile Folks (the gaming team!) also came and shared some thoughts with us.
Take away from the meeting:
- It is very difficult to meet marketing “windows” when you work with the Chinese market, where application time for the China Mobile deck for example can go up to 6 months (marketing window = launching a licensed game before or in the same time as the movie for example).
- New business models will emerge, outside the operators’ control (Glu launched a scratch card with Maxis in Malaysia on one of its recent launches), but for now, the classic SP-Operator relationship and billing still holds, and downloads (according to China Mobile) have been increasing steadily.
- Contrary to what people might think, the timing to invest in mobile gaming in china is appropriate. Mobile gaming, outsourcing or selling to the local market, is poised to grow, especially with higher bandwidth available with 3G.
A special thanks to Robert Hayes, MD APAC of Glu, flying from Hong-Kong, and Petri Talala, VP at FutureMark, who flew from Finland.
Congratulations, finally, to Philip Ma from HP and David Cao from Streamezzo who won the lucky draw tickets for the DeBono Conference on Sept 20, valued each over EUR 500 each.
