With the expected and massive arrival of GPS-enabled mobile phones and PMP (Portable Multimedia Players) and in-vehicle navigation devices in the Chinese market, location-based services is set to take off in the coming few months.

Though we are still unclear on how much money is to be made in this market, our expert speakers gave us a few ideas ahead:

Device, Device, Device!

According to Kirvan Pierson, this is where the money is. And he is not alone. Destinator also relies on device-embedded applications, currently available on PND (Personal Navigation Devices), PDAs and now cell phones. There are
300 PND manufacturers in China, and the bulk currently supplies to 77Mil vehicles in use, growing at 16% CAGR through 2011. This is where growth will be sustained in the coming few years.

Network-based applications will be slow to pick due to China Mobile and China Unicom speed (or lack therefore) in making the technology easily available to MVAS providers.

Connected applications (embedded in device, but refreshed real-time) will prevail. Maps are a perfect example. GPS-enabled devices will become mainstream (USD 5 only for a chipset currently).

Pure LBS will be restricted to niches (police, emergencies etc). MTI showed that building a business on LBS only and customized devices for elderly, handicapped people or kids is possible. Niche specialization should be key to success here.
