On May 21, 2007, Vodafone launched its first “Vodafone-only branded ultra-low cost consumer handsets”. In the same time, we have seen outside of China the emergence of a breed of co-branded handsets, such as the Motorazr Dolce & Gabana, the LG Prada phone, Disney Mobile phones (etc), a trend fostered also by the emergence of MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operator – Virgin Mobile is an example) across Europe and the US, and the need for greater differentiation from retail brands. So far, China and its 2 largest operators have only mildly caught up with the fever, offering only slight customization in a few selected handsets, and little or no “quality” accessories accompanying new branded phone concepts. Modelabs Group, an expert in the field of tailor-made mobile phones and accessories, along with Disney Consumer Products, which launched an MVNO in the US and branded handsets in many countries including China, and EBT Mobile, one of the largest mobile phone distributors in China, will help us assess how the local mobile phone market will evolve towards phone and accessories branding and differentiation, and when!
